PROJECTS REALISED IN THE YEAR 2010

Brazil

In Brasil, the Missionary Movement “Jesus in thy Neighbour” has 62 homes in the following states: Parana, Minas Gerais, Tocantinopolis, Maranhão, Piuaí, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Manaus. In these homes, the children are receiving a holistic education, where children under ten years of age spend most of the day at school, and are also given food on a daily basis. Whilst the children are receiving the much needed education, their parents will be having the opportunity to go to work.

Casa Cruz de Malta. In the city of Sao Mateus, in the dioceses of Coroata’, in the state of Maranhao, we finished the construction work of the new halls that will make it possible to meet the demand of lots of families that want to send their children to learn at our center. These halls were inaugurated on the 12th of October 2010.

Dona Emanuela Grima Home was opened on the first of May, in the city of Custodia, in the dioceses of Flroesta, in the state of Pernambuca. This home provides education and food for about 120 poor young children.

Reforming and enhancing KM17. In the village of KM17, in the dioceses of Coroata’, in the state of Maranhao, new classes were built in order to accommodate more local children. We strongly believe that education is the best investment for the future of these children, hence we felt the necessity to enhance our educational services in order to be able to offer a better educational experience for a greater number of children.

ETHIOPIA

Day Centre for poor children in Awassa. The Missionary Movement started working on the project in collaboration with the Sisters Helpers of Mary (India) last year. The main beneficiaries of this day center are children who are suffering from malnutrition. Hunderds of children are in great need of food, shelter, and above all, lots of love.

Homes for Lepers in Nekemte. Hundreds of lepers were evacuated from the cemetery in which they were living, ending up in the streets. The missionary movement carried out a campaign on Malta’s media in order to collect funds to start the much needed construction of homes for these human beings.

On the 13th of February, Mons. George Grima blessed the first Day Center in Qabdo, dioceses of Nekemte, amongst the unexplainable enthiusiasm of the locals. This center is run by the sisters Helpers of Mary ( India ).

In the vicariate of Nekemte, the movement continued with the construction of more than 30 homes for Lepers in Ambo. On the 1st of February, Mons. George Grima blessed the land, with the work commencing immediately. On the 20th of May, Mons. Makrus, Bishop of Jimma, blessed a number of new homes, and handed the keys to the families.  Always in Ambo, the Movement, together with the Vicentini Society and another two benefactors that are sponsoring the drilling of a borehole, where more than 5000 families will be benefiting. The parish, seminary, and our Day Centre will also benefit from this borehole.

In the city of Karro, dioceses of Nekembte, together with the group Reaching Out – Malta, the Movement starting the construction of a big clinic that will cater for more than 10,000 families. The Government brought them in the area from Harar because of the great drought that hit their region. The project will be named Wayne’s Clinic. Wayne was a young Maltese who worked for the collection of funds for this project, but who unfortunately died in an accident.

In the city of Babiche, diocese of Nekemte, Mons George Grima blessed the first Day Centre in the city. The center will be catering for hundreds of children, who come early in the morning, and remain there till 4pm, where they will be provided with food and education.

In one of the villages around Babiche, a borehole that serves thousands of families was constructed. Before the project, the people had to walk kilometers in order to get some water.

In the village of Bajo, dioceses of Nekemte, a Grinding Mill was built in order to cater for the poor families that live in the area, alleviating a little bit their life from their constant hardships.

In the village of Bita Woshi, vicariate of Jimma, apart from the Day Centre, the local families now can benefit from a natural spring that was managed in order to supply water for thousands of families.

In the vicariate of Gambella, the drilling for a new borehole in the village of Matar has just been terminated. More than 2000 families are benefiting from this borehole.

In the vicariate of Jimma, in the village of Shera, Mons George Grima blessed the first nursery school. The hundreds of children benefiting from this project will spend 6 hours daily, where they will have Montessori teachers, and will also be supplied with food.

The very harsh weather that hit Aman damaged most of the school that we had constructed in the area. Bishop Mons. Markus G/Medhin asked us to re-built the damaged buildings so that the children will not have to study under the trees. Eventually, thanks to the funds collected by our benefactors, the project was implemented, and was blessed in May by Bishop Markus himself.

In the village of Buba, always in the vicariate of Jimma, more than 50 young children are attending school on a daily basis. Currently the school is under the trees, and when it reains, the children shelter under the hut shown above-left, but the Movement has plans to commence the construction of a nursery in the near future.

Teaching for young children commenced in the village of Deda, vicariate of Jimma, and the Movement has plans to build the first school for these children, which children never stepped in a school! They never touched a pencil or a book before this education initiative, making it even more difficult for them to enhance their very difficult situation.

In the village of Jawe, vicariate of Gambella, the work on a new borehole has commenced. When materialized, more than 4000 families will benefit from this project.

In Akado Pimoli, vicariate of Gambella, Mons George Grima blessed the first day centre for children who never went to school in their life. This is the only possibility for the children of this village to attend school.

The work of another day center in the viacrate of Gambella, this time in the village of Niko, has commenced. Mons George Grima blessed the first stone of a building which will provide a roof for the children that currently are attending school under the trees. The local chaplain worked very hard so that in the near future, the children will be able to attend school indoors.

On the 6th of February, Archbishop Berhaneyesus of Addis Ababa blessed the first church in Mandura. This is the first church for a tribe that till some years ago, was completely pagan. The church was dedicated to Christ the Savior.

In the Vicariate of Soddo, the drilling of a borehole has commenced. More than 2000 families will be benefiting from this borehole. The Bishop of Soddo, Mons Rodrigo welcomed the project with enthusiasm. This project is being implemented in collaboration between the Missionary Movement and Rasbock Foundation, USA

In the Pokot tribe, 92% do not have any schooling! In the city of Claude Montessori Academy, the Movement commenced the construction of two new halls which will cater for primary education of even more children. The area suffers from very harsh poverty, and schooling is a great necessity.

In Chemsik, severe hunger is reigning for thousands of families, hence the Movement is supplying food on a monthly basis for these poor families. We hope that in the future, we will be able to build a school for the children in the area. Food is also being supplied in Kositei and Chemolingo.

The Movement is hoping that the first Kindergarden will be constructed in Claude, as this would be the first possibility for the children in the area to attend school. Bishop M. Makumba blessed the request made by the parish chaplain. Currently, the children have two very humble shelters made from dried leaves and twigs, but we are still providing food and teaching.

In the city of Pawe , the poor locals suffer severly from eye problems, hence Sister Meskel asked the Movement if it was possible to open an eye clinic. In March, the clinic was eventually opened, and hundreds of children and adults attend very day.

In Larwatum, parish of Kositei, dioceses of Nakuru, children are now studying on a bench indoors. More than 70 children are attending the school and receiving food on a daily basis. This project was implemented after a period of 5 years in which the children used to get their education under the trees.

Kenya

In Kenya, the Movement is working in various localities, and thank God, progress is occurring in various cases, although much work still persists. In the Divine Mercy Home alone, in the dioceses of Home Bay, 3 new projects were tackled.

Divine Mercy Home School. On the 26th of March, the work on the second block of the school was finished.  A number of children live in the home itself, but others come in for their education from the village of Sero. This second block was sponsored by Mons Abbott Berthold Heigl OSB, and the blessed was done by the chaplain of the village, Fr. Timon Ochieng.

On the 31st of April, during Holy Mass, Fr. Timon Ochieng inaugurated the new electrical system that will cater for all the Divine Mercy Home. Bishop Philip Anyolo also visited the complex.

It was Mons Philip Anyolo wish to place a statue of the Divine Mercy on the façade of the Divine Mercy home. The artwork was sponsored by the Parish of Mgarr, Malta. The work was made in Malta by Thomas Abdilla, and when transported to Kenya , was blessed by Bishop Mons Philip Anyolo himself on the 14th of October.

About one year ago, one of our dreams came true. We started a very ambitious project. On October 4th, 2008, Fr. Gorg Grima blessed the land that we managed to buy in the city of Bondo, in Kenya. Now, work on the third dormitory for blind and albino children in the Sacred Family Home,  is being continued. Hopefully, in the near future, work on the pavement around the four blocks will commence.

Mr John Camilleri visited Kenya in order to set up a workshop where beds, tables, and other metal necessities are manufactured thanks to the welding skills achieved. In February 2011, another 6 volunteers will continue working on the project, which project is going to cost around €15,000.

On the 5th of October, in the Oasis of Peace St. Mary Magdalene Home, Mons. George Grima, celebrated Holy Mass and blessed the place on which another home will be constructed for poor children under twelve years, suffering from AIDS.  This project is financed by the Parish of St. Mary Magdalene, in the dioceses of Philadelphia , USA.

In the periphery of Homa Bay, thanks to a number of NGOs, another home is being built for abandoned children. Amongst these NGOs, the Missionary Movement “Jesus in Thy Neighbour”, and in fact, the name of this new home is going to be Manwela Grima Home, in respect of the late Mons Gorg Grima’s mother.

ST. MARTIN DE PORRES. in the village of Nyabondo, work is underway on the construction of two new dormitories for children with special disabilities. The construction work slowed down due to the lack of funds. We hope that the much required funds will be eventually available, so as to conclude the project in the near future.

Gatina Day Centre - Nairobi. Thanks to the hard work of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Malta, a day center for more than 700 children is being run. Recently, a new flight of stairs and toilets were constructed.

In the dioceses of Bungoma, in the complex of St. Anthony Dumb and Deaf School, due to the ever increasing number of deaf and dumb children, we had to enlarge our dormitories. Thanks to this project, we are now able to offer help to much more children.

Thanks to God’s infinite love and help, and thanks to our generous benefactors, we were able to implement the projects mentioned above. Everything we do is entirely for His glory.

                                                                                                                            Mons. George Grima
